A fresh look at everyday eating

It’s A New Year…

So, we’re about 2 weeks into the new year. How’s it going? You know what I mean. How are you doing with those resolutions?  For those of you who made your resolutions and have stuck with them, I am so happy for you and hope that you continue to stick with them. The truth is, about 25% of us that made new years resolutions on the first of the year have already broke them.  And, in about 6 months that number will be 46%.  But, why is this?

Research shows that the reason may be that we are “aiming too high” right from the start. We tend to set unrealistic goals and then beat ourselves up when we don’t meet them. The perfect example is with weight loss. Stating that you’re going to lose 30 pounds by mid-year instead of setting the goal of 10 pounds in a few months may be setting yourself up for disappointment. It’s better to set small goals that will ultimately lead to your larger goals. Small wins along the way pump you up and give you that encouragement to keep going.

Another reason we fail? We make these goals without a solid plan.  Simply stating that you’re going to “lose weight” or “improve eating habits” without a detailed plan about how to make it happen doesn’t work. My advice is to write your goals down, and make them realistic, obtainable, and measureable.  For example, “I will walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes three times a week”. Or, “I will have salads for lunch on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays”.

Lastly, being accountable for your actions will help you to reach your goals. Weight loss programs where you have to report your successes (or failures) to a coach or partner tend to have higher success rates.  Knowing that someone will be reviewing your food journal or exercise log keeps you on track with your goals.
